Lourdes Vargas earned her Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Science at Mercy College.  She is currently studying at Mercy College to earn her Masters in Education, with the hope of focusing on children with special needs.  Lourdes began her work informally while raising her own three children.  She then began to make children her career, working at with a Family Daycare Provider and then as a teacher’s assistant at the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership, a local Head Start program.  While the curriculum at the Head Start was not designed to facilitate bilingual language development, Lourdes noted that translating for children who spoke Spanish seemed to make them feel more comfortable.  Lourdes herself spoke only Spanish upon entering school as she came to the United States from Puerto Rico when she was only 5 years old and her family spoke only Spanish at home.  She came to La Escuelita in the fall of 2007 enthusiastic about being a bilingual teacher and being able to teach children through play.
