Directors’ Columns

Each month, La Escuelita Directors write a column relating to education, bilingualism, or parenting.

Thank you to all of our families, teachers, staff and board members for making our first week at 225 West 99th Street a success! We love our new home and we celebrated it together with our Annual New Family Picnic held at the school this year instead of Riverside Park. The feel was part potluck picnic, part housewarming party and it truly highlighted the benefits of our new school. Children played freely on the private playground, within classrooms and in our indoor gym.

We are looking forward to an unforgettable first year in this new chapter of La Escuelita's life.

I can’t believe it’s April already and nearing the end of my first year serving as Administrative Director. Our last PLT meeting covered Graduation, Carnaval and end of year activities! Where did the time go?

One of my favorite memories as a parent at La Escuelita was standing in the 4’s class about this time last year, reflecting with Vianey Corzo on what a journey it had been for our girls. My Isabella and her Diana started in the Afternoon 2/3s class together and now we were lingering at drop-off on this particular morning, just watching the girls play together. We talked about how special La Escuelita had been for the girls; the friends they had made, how confident they ...

For those who missed the opportunity to attend our special learning sessions at the JCC this past month, here’s a glance at how La Escuelita is working to better inform our community about early bilingual education and play-based learning. We want to be your best resource, so if you have any ideas for future topics we can explore together, please don’t hesitate to share them with us.

We were honored to host Dr. Ellen Bialystok on October 1st, whose research has inspired the popular conversation in recent years on the cognitive benefits of bilingualism. She shared some of her findings with us, including the benefit of a possible delayed onset of dementia among bilinguals, but also ...

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Rosie, Diana and our teachers these past seven days getting ready for the 2015-16 school year, which starts in a week on Tuesday September 8. It’s both gratifying and enlightening to see just how much goes on "backstage." I’ve watched dismantled classrooms start to quickly come alive in a matter of days. Our teachers love their work and care for each other; we have a strong veteran teaching team at La Escuelita and we benefit greatly from that. The teachers return from home visits excited about meeting their new families and children and there is genuine love apparent. I used to wonder if the teachers really loved my Isabella as much as...

Former Administrative Director Lori Falchi shares something important to her both personally and academically. What follows is a heart-felt piece of advice to families who hope their children will get excited about asking questions, digesting answers, and pursuing lifelong learning.

One winter morning, my son woke up asking “How many stars are there?” I wondered how long he'd been working on that one! Thinking of Carl Sagan saying “billions and billions. . .” about the countless stars and galaxies, I went online to find an answer to this query. But I did not find definitive answers: 100 billion, 200 billion (possibly half of that), 300 million in the Milky Way. . . We...
